Socks!

Last year I when I was in Germany the extremely talented Frau Elkenhans measured my hand and informed me that she would knit me a pair of socks. Some months later when I met my friends Helmut and Marion in NYC they had a special package for me. Much to my delight it was the most beautiful pair of socks I had ever seen. They are my extra fancy super warm and dress up socks.

Girl Scout

My one hundred and four and a half year old grandmother's life was revolutionized by Girl Scouting. Venturing forth from the confines and strictures of the Bronx and setting up a rustic campsite in the wilderness was immensely freeing. All the fresh air, traipsing through the woods, splashing about in icy waters, and traversing lakes and rivers via canoe were an invigorating and refreshing tonic to consticted city life! Discovering and exploring the natural world- how exhilarating! My grandmother's passion for the outdoors has lasted a lifetime.

One Hundred and Four

My Grandma just turned 104 years old and nothing gets past her be it current events or the doings of her 9 grandchildren or her 26 greatgrands. She remembers the flapper era when she and her friends wore their galoshes unbuckled so they'd flap around, skipping rope in the alleyways of New York, traveling across the Atlantic as a young bride with her English husband, journeying to the deep south to help my mother when I was born. She is treasure trove indeed.

Stay

Growing up as a military brat meant moving nearly every year. I often wonder what it would have meant to stay in each of the multiplicity of places we lived.
