Indiana 1958

This is the infamous tricycle the seat of which a neighborhood girl had the utter temerity to pee upon thenceforth permanently contaminating it in the mind of my young sister. She refused to ever ride it again. I however was not quite so fastidious and quickly commandeered the vehicle.

Deja vu

Sometimes you think you've lived before/ all that you've lived today/ Things you do come back to you/ as though you knew the way./Some things that happened for the first time seem to be happening again/ The clothes you're wearing are the clothes you wore/ For the smile you are smiling you were smiling then/ But I can't remember where or when" Frank Sinatra

Savour

The Campfire Kids was a club started by a bunch of us kiddies in our neighborhood. The sole purpose of this club was to burn campfires in the woods. We kind of had to sneak around to do this. I'm not recommending this practice but it was a lot of fun.We exhibited extreme caution and cleared the area and put down rocks to encircle the pit. At first we cooked marshmallows and hotdogs then we cooked apples and potatoes in the coals. They tasted best encrusted with ash. Warm and savoury! I trust you and yours had a blessed Thanksgiving around the home fires.

Transportation

In the 1950's when I went to Kindergarten my teacher did not allow the girls to play with the these big wooden toy trucks the classroom was outfitted with. Under normal conditions I probably wouldn't have wanted to play with the vehicles but their forbidden nature made them particularly alluring.

Old Fashioned

My grandmother, who will turn 103 this October 12th,recalls roaming throughout the Bronx on her roller skates. She remembers riding with her Aunt Minnie on a horse drawn trolley. She remembers when the New York subway opened up, saw the ticker tape parade for Lindberg among many other things. What a treasure trove she is. My grandmother phones me regularly and gives me the rundown on everything that's going on. Nothing gets by her. What a blessing it is to still have her formidable wisdom and wit.

Caged

I recollect jumping "Double Dutch" in the gigantic communal backyard of the housing area of Aberdeen Proving Grounds the dual ropes creating a movable cage of sorts.

Breakfast

My Dad was an accomplished pancake artiste. Any form that could be shaped from blopping batter in a frying pan be it bear, mouse, bunny or snowman he could create it.

Fearless

I remember the utter jubilation the pure unmitigated excitement I felt when my Mother brought my second sister home from the hospital. She was wrapped in a blue bunting that my Mom had used on my sister Cindy and me when we lived in Alaska. I was still two and a half years old so that means my parents had a grand total of three children all under the age of three. And four more brothers were yet to be added all born while we were living in different places. That's pretty fearless. I'm not quite that fearless myself. My Mother was always very thin despite having seven kids. I suppose she never had time to eat. And every day she put on her coral lipstick that went perfectly with her olive complexion. Happy Mother's Day again Mom!

Cocoon

Once when I was a kid I was out playing in the woods(which is what kids did back in the day before over scheduling)and I discovered what I thought was a cocoon affixed to a branch. I brought it home and put it in a jar. The next day much to my astonishment hundreds of tiny praying mantises had emerged from the egg casing overnight. It was midwinter and I suppose the warmth of the house must have precipitated this praying mantis outburst. The poor darlings were so ravenous and having nothing else to eat in their little jar they were devouring one another. My mother wouldn't let me keep them in the house so I had to let them loose in the freezing cold. I've always felt sad about that.

Expired

It was well nigh impossible to reckon as to whether Elden had indeed expired or if the critter was merely playing possum.

Undone

Georgie Gingerbread was so happy to have his own special house. Oh but he was sad when his special house came undone.
